London-based Amnesty International (AI) Wednesday welcomed the government request for United Nations involvement in ending impunity for 1971 violations.

"Action to end impunity for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law committed in 1971 is long overdue.

The failure to tackle this has encouraged the persistent nature of impunity in Bangladesh," an AI press release said, reports UNB.

The government on Tuesday sought support from the UN for the trial of the 1971 war criminals in the wake of a growing campaign to bring to justice the Bengali-speaking collaborators of the Pakistani troops during the liberation war.

The Foreign ministry in a brief statement said Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury made the request to the world body as he called on UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters in New York on March 31 (Monday).

The global rights watchdog AI also recently asked the interim government to initiate trial process of "war criminals" of the 1971 Liberation War, suggesting Dhaka to seek UN assistance following the examples of Cambodia and several other countries.
