Sheikh HasinaDetained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was taken to hospital for a routine check-up on Wednesday, just days after being discharged following treatment for high blood pressure, a senior prison official said.

Hasina, president of the Awami League, one of Bangladesh's biggest parties, was taken to the Square Hospital at Dhanmandi, in the capital Dhaka, on Wednesday morning under tight security, but was sent back to jail within hours.

"If necessary, she will be brought back here again," Zakir Hossain, director general of prisons, told Reuters.

Doctors at the Square Hospital were not immediately available for comment.

Hasina was admitted to the same hospital on March 11, but discharged and taken back to her specially built prison on Sunday. She is suffering from high blood pressure, ear and eye ailments and other complications, her personal physicians said.

Hasina's party and family want the ex-premier to be sent overseas, preferably to the United States where her children live, for treatment for her ear problem.

They have urged the government to allow her to travel abroad on parole. But the government has yet to make a decision on that. Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, suffered hearing impairment following grenade blasts at a rally she was addressing in Dhaka on Aug. 21, 2004. She went to the United States in early 2007 for treatment for the condition.

The former prime minister has been held at a building in Dhaka's sprawling parliament compound since her arrest in July last year on corruption charges.
