The Force Commander of the United Nations Operation in Cote d’lvoire (ONUCI), General Marcel Fernand Amoussou, presided over a medal ceremony honouring the Bangladeshi contingent in Daloa, 380 km from Abidjan on Wednesday coinciding with the Independence Day of Bangladesh, reports agency.
On the occasion, 2,728 soldiers received the United Nations peacekeeping medal after serving for more than six months in Cote d’ivoire, said a press release.
Brig. General Mustafa Kamal Khan, the commander of UNOCI’s Sector West, thanked all actors in civil society, and the UN and Ivorian military for providing assistance to the Bangladeshi contingent. He expressed their pride in receiving the medal on the day commemorating Bangladesh’s declaration of independence.
General Khan said that they were proud to participate in the resolution of the conflict in Cote d’Ivoire and expressed their resolve to collectively defend the UN mandate for bringing peace here. On behalf of the Special Representative of the Secretary General, YJ Choi, General Amoussou thanked Daloa’s political-administrative authorities, as well as traditional and religious leaders for their continuing support to the forces on the ground in Cote d’Ivoire and in particular the Bangladesh units deployed.
Before he congratulated the medal recipients and encouraged them for the work accomplished, General Amoussu reaffirmed that “the strength of ONUCI in helping with this crisis is that it provides security so that the Ivorian brothers can find tranquility, peace and harmony that has always characterized this great country.”
Bangladesh first entered the family of “Blue Helmets” in 1988, and since then provided over 60,000 soldiers. Currently more than 9,600 Bangladeshi soldiers and police are operating in 11 different peacekeeping operations, making Bangladesh among the top providers of uniformed personnel to the United Nations. Bangladesh provides one third of the troop strength in ONUCI, the press release added.
