Speakers at a roundtable on ‘Empowerment of Women’ on Saturday stressed the need for taking effective steps by the government to implement the ‘women development policy’ to ensure their equal status in the society, reports UNB.

The roundtable organised by the Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) at its newly built headquarters in the city was presided over by BEA president Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad.

BEA secretary general Professor Abul Barakat, former secretary and current chairman of Agrani Bank Ltd Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank Ibrahim Khaled and chairman of Bangladesh Krishi Bank Shamina Begum, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Two papers were presented by economists Hannana Begum and Dr Mahmuda Khatun. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad said the empowerment of women in the society has made significant progress but their equal rights need to be accepted.

They have long way to go to see that they have achieved their goal, he observed.

Ibrahim Khaled said the government always talks to the stakeholders, it is the practice and following it, the authorities should sit with the leaders of the women to sort out contentious issues.

Prof. Barakat said the declared women policy must be retained and the budget should have additional allocation for women development.
