The forthcoming budget may carry some announcements regarding pay hikes for government officials and employees, finance adviser AB Mirza Azizul Islam told reporters Thursday.

After attending a meeting on salaries and allowances paid by different ministries, the adviser said: "There are discrepancies in the pay packages of different government officials and employees serving with different ministries."

It showed lack of coordination, Mirza Aziz added. Six proposals were forwarded at the meeting for addressing the existing discrepancies, five of which were endorsed.

The exception was a proposal tabled by one of the intelligence agencies. Asked if any discussion on pay rises took place in the meeting, Mirza Aziz said: "Any relevant decision taken will be notified."

"The government has, on principle, begun deliberating on the issue as it weighs increasing salaries by 10 to 20 percent." "A final decision on implementing the same will take a little time," the finance adviser said.

Asked whether the upcoming budget would carry the announcement of pay increases, he said: "Let's hope the next budget may carry some message on this."

Presided over by the finance adviser, the meeting was attended by food adviser AMM Shawkat Ali, local government adviser Anwarul Iqbal, cabinet secretary Ali Imam Majumdar, shipping secretary Sheikh Enayetullah and acting finance secretary Dr M Tareque.
