World Tuberculosis Day was observed in the country Monday as elsewhere across the globe with a call for all to join the fight against the contagious disease, reports UNB.

The theme of this year’s World TB Day 2008 is: ‘I am stopping TB’, meaning tuberculosis is a concern for all and all can help stop it.

On this day in 1882, Dr Robert Koch officially announced his discovery of the TB bacillus. In 1982, on the 100th anniversary of Dr Koch’s announcement, WHO and IUATLD sponsored the first World TB Day to raise public awareness about tuberculosis and its prevention.

On the occasion, the government as well as NGOs organised various programmes like rally, seminar, workshop and discussion on tuberculosis, aiming to motivate the people to join the campaign against TB.

A colorful rally under National Tuberculosis Control Programme was brought out in the city in the morning. About 34 NGOs, including Brac, took part in the rally.

A workshop titled ‘Social Participation in Combating TB’ was held at Jatiya Press Club in the evening. Programme Coordinator of Brac Health Programme Dr Akramul Islam presented the keynote paper in the workshop.

An advocacy meeting was held at the auditorium of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in Mohakhali.

The Chest and Heart Association of Bangladesh and National Tuberculosis Control Programme under Health Directorate organised the meeting.

The need for adopting effective measures for eradicating tuberculosis from the country and the Tuberculosis is the only disease against which the government has taken initiatives on war footing-basis and succeeded in controlling it in successful manner.
