Speakers at a seminar Saturday laid stress on acquiring command over international languages for building career and enhancing understanding and collaboration between nations, reports agency.

They also said language play a vital role in the overall trade and diplomacy by establishing a worldwide linkage. The speakers were addressing the seminar on ‘Language for a Better Career’ jointly organized by Institute of Modern Languages (IML) of Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka Language Club (DLC) at the auditorium of IML.

DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor SMA Faiz attended the function as the chief guest while chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury was the special guest. Director of IML Dr Anwar Hossain chaired the seminar while president of DLC Masud A Khan presented the keynote paper.

DU VC said the present era is being considered as the age of information, where knowledge has become the most valuable resource. He said application of language could take us a long way in trade and diplomacy. “At first we should learn our mother language properly than we have to learn other international languages to face the global challenges”, he added.

Zaglul A Chowdhury stressed the need for improving the people’s efficiency in international languages, as the standard particularly in English is relatively low here compared to most South Asian countries.

He laid emphasize on acquiring proper knowledge particularly good command over languages for achieving success in journalism and other professions. Director of IML Dr Anwar Hossain said language barrier is affecting the country’s balance of payment.
