Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda Thursday said the commission wants to hold the local-government polls at a convenient time at the end of April or middle of May this year, reports UNB.

"If possible, the EC wants to hold election to four city corporations.

We also want to hold election to Dhaka City Corporation before the national elections," he said while addressing a training programme on voter list with photograph and national identity card at Shilpakala Academy in Goalanda Upazila in the morning.

He made it clear that their first target is to hold the national elections on completion of the work on voter list and the polls would be held within the year 2008 anyway.

"When work on the voter list will be completed, we will give election according to our roadmap," CEC Huda said. He said, "We are also considering whether the Upazila and national elections could be held together. If held together, the elections would be completed with same manpower and cost."

Dr Huda noted that if anyone missed such national identity card, then he/she would have to face many hurdles in future. Presided over by Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Brig Gen Shah Atiqur Rahman, acting Police Super Mahfuzur Rahman, District Election Officer Rakib Uddin Mondal, Goalanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Moniruzzaman and elected local representatives and civil-society members.
