Stocks finished higher for a third day Thursday as investors continued to buy. The Dhaka Stock Exchange's general index surpassing the 3000 mark, while turnover also increased.

Market analysts said investors bought heavily in a bid to restyle their investment portfolios.

An official from brokerage house Latif Securities said they had dealt with a lot of less popular scrips throughout the day, including some designated as Z category.

The day's turnover board was dominated by cement, pharmaceuticals, mutual funds and textiles scrips. DSE chief executive Salahuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com: "Investors are gambling their money on a variety of shares. This is because the most popular issues, which are banks, have finished declaring their dividends."

Dhaka stocks rose sharply from the opening bell, remaining steady throughout the day, to end higher. The benchmark DGEN or general index advanced 39.07 points, or 1.30 percent, to end on 3025.48. The DSI or all share price index finished at 2554.73, up 32 points, or 1.26 percent.

The bourse's blue chip DSE-20 rose 32.27 points, or 1.44 percent, to end on 2258.86. Turnover on the country's prime bourse surged to Tk 3.32 billion from 25,401,837 traded shares. Gainers beat losers 180 to 74, while two issues remained unchanged. Square Pharma topped the turnover board, finishing 3.80 percent higher at Tk 3869.25.

Beximco Pharma followed, ending on Tk 75.80, up 5.71 percent. Power Grid Company of Bangladesh rose 4.36 percent to close at Tk 651.25.

Lafarge Surma Cement, a G group issue, gained 7.41 percent to close at Tk 532.25. AB Bank closed at Tk 3182, down 0.28 percent. Among other scrips on the turnover board: Grameen Mutual Fund One and Heidelberg Cement lost. ICB 1st NRB Mutual Fund, Apex Adelchi Footwear and Square Textiles gained.

Indices on the Chittagong Stock Exchange also ended upbeat. The CSCX or selective categories index advanced 44.96 points, or 0.66 percent, to end on 4964.54. The CASPI or all share price index finished at 7847.40, up 100.95 points, or 1.30 percent. The CSE-30 blue chip rose 44.96 points, or 0.66 percent, to close at 6798.79.

Turnover on the port city's bourse surged to Tk 496.78 million from Tk 457.63 million the previous day. Of the issues traded, 111 advanced, 45 declined and four held steady.
