Staff Reporter Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty Tuesday said Bangladesh should give India transit facility for using Chittagong seaport in its own interest, reports UNB. "If Bangladesh gives transit to India, it will boost Bangladesh''s economy and significantly reduce foreign aid dependence," he told journalists after visiting trade fair at the polo ground in the port city. He said India has given proposal to Bangladesh long ago to get the facility to use Chittagong port. "We are waiting for the permission of the government," he added. Referring to India''s contribution to the independence of Bangladesh, he said, "We, both the countries, should extend hands to each other to uphold the cordial relations established in 1971." When asked what he thinks about general election in Bangladesh, the Indian envoy said India hopes the election commission would hold a free, fair and credible election with the participation of all political parties as per their declared roadmap. Earlier, he held a meeting with members of the board of directors of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the chamber Bhaban. The Indian Deputy High Commission here gave him reception in the evening when he went to the Indian warship Ranjith, one of a fleet of three that came to Bangladesh Monday. |
