Top politicians and academics Tuesday said detained Awami League president Sheikh Hasina''s release is the only solution for salvaging the country from the prevailing crises and demanded her immediate unconditional release, reports UNB.

They viewed at a discussion that the ex-PM was being detained to implement the so-called ''minus-two'' theory but not only Sheikh Hasina alone but people''s democratic rights were also being minused through such action.

They further fulminated that Sheikh Hasina was arrested as she had stated that an intelligence agency was running the country--but she was "absolutely right".

"The country is now passing through serious crises, and without Sheikh Hasina, none can recover the country from this situation. So the government should release Hasina to save the country from any unfortunate consequences," acting Awami League president Zillur Rahman said.

The discussion was organized by AL marking the 89th birth anniversary of father of the nation Bangabandhu sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Engineers'' Institute.

AL presidium member Amir Hossain Amu said the government should honour Awami League''s application to the Chief Advisor of the caretaker government with a request to release Hasina and arrange appropriate treatment for her in the USA.

He demanded of the government to set free the ailing AL chief, saying that party would take all the responsibilities of her better treatment.

Another Presidium member, Tofael Ahmed, said those who are trying to stop Sheikh Hasina would not be successful. He demanded sending her to the USA for her treatment.

"Otherwise," he threatened, "the government will have to bear all the responsibility if anything happened to her." AL presidium member Suranjit Sengupta demanded of the caretaker government to start democratic process by withdrawing the state of emergency ahead of the electoral process. He also demanded of the government to promulgate an ordinance recognizing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as father of the nation.

Acting AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam requested the government to honour party''s application to Chief Advisor for arranging her appropriate treatment in the USA. "We sent application to the Chief Advisor and that is enough.

Now government should take initiative in this regard as we don''t want to think of alternative way," he told his audience.
