Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC) paid tributes to Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to conquer the Mount Everest of Himalayas, at a discussion meeting at the NSC conference room Tuesday, reports UNB.

Sir Edmund Hillary, who along with Tenzing of Tibet set their feet first on the summit of Mount Everest on May 19, 1953 after long 33 years of futile efforts by many, died at his home town in New Zealand on January 11 this year.

Renowned freedom fighter and sports personality Maj Gen (retd) Amin Ahmed Chowdhury was the chief guest at the discussion meeting chaired by BMTC President and Chief Editor of UNB Enayetullah Khan.

Director and CEO of Bangladesh Olympic Association Col Md Wali Ullah (retd) and BMTC founder and Antarctica and North Pole expeditor Enam Ul Haque spoke on the occasion. Bangladeshi mountaineer MA Mohit described their training and trekking expedition towards Himalayas through a slideshow.

Another Bangladeshi mountaineer Sajal Khaled presented a slideshow on Hillary. The function was told that Bangladeshi mountaineers have a record of reaching 22,000 feet of the Mount Everest. The BMTC was formed in 2003, aiming to create people aware about trekking and prepare them through training.

CA receives donation for Sidr victims Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed received 30 cheques for Taka 1,27,60,000 from Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at the CA’s Office yesterday for the Sidr victims, reports BSS.

The donations were received through Bangladesh missions abroad, said a press release of the Foreign Ministry Wednesday. Of the amount, Taka 55,59,000 was received from expatriate Bangladeshis and US $ 66,772 from the governments of Bhutan and Cyprus, Hong Kong Islamic Society, Bangladesh community in Brunei and Bangladeshi garment workers in Brunei.
