Staff Correspondent Sanjidul Islam Imon and Ishaq Ali, two top criminals deported by the Indian police on March 7, were placed on another five-day remand on Monday. Imon was remanded in an arms case filed with Mohammadpur thana on Sunday and Ishaq in a case filed with airport police in 2002 for smuggling foreign currency out of the country. The Criminal Investigation Department, which is investigating both the cases, produced the two criminals before the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on Monday after the end of their eight-day remand on Sunday. The CID, showing Imon arrested in the arms case filed with the Mohammadpur thana, sought a 10-day remand for him. A revolver and more than 100 rounds of ammunition, buried in the earth beside the Rayer Bazaar memorial, was dug up seized on Saturday night after the site was revealed by Imon, claimed the CID. The police also arrested one of his associates, Tunda Jahangir Ali, from Tongi in Gazipur after his location was revealed by Imon, on the same night. ‘Imon should be interrogated intensively in remand to locate more firearms hidden by him and to nab his associates,’ said the CID in the petition for further remand. After hearing, metropolitan magistrate Al Mamun granted a further five-day remand for interrogating Imon. The police said that the customs officials arrested Ishaq while he was trying to smuggle foreign currency equivalent to Tk 3,42,14,000 out of the country through the Zia International Airport in 2002. But Ishaq left the country after he was released on bail. The police also sought a 10-day remand for interrogating him in connection with the case. After the hearing, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate granted five days of remand for Ishaq. |
