Demand for reform of the quota system in recruitment for the Bangladesh Civil Service cadres through the examinations conducted by the Public Service Commission has been strengthened in recent times. Only a couple of days back, There has been a sustained movement in support of the demand for reform of the quota system in recruitment. This movement has been spearheaded by the Dhaka University students under the banner of ‘Quota Reform Movement . On Sunday the students demonstrated on the DU campus and gave an ultimatum to the government to publish the report of the two—member committee formed by the PSC to examine and suggest reforms of the quota system now existing, by 29th March . The Chairman of the PSC who submitted the annual report of the PSC to the President recently, apprised the President of the situation regarding the holding of BCS examination free of political manipulation and corruption , witnessed in the past, and also about the two-member committee examining the issue for the quota system .Till now the recruitment to the various cadres of the BCS ,over 50 per cent of the recruitment is reserved for various quota categories which include Freedom Fighter families , various less developed districts and regions and for the ‘adibasi’ people of our country. We have commented on several occasions in the past in our editorial columns , the need for quota system reform . We look forward to an effective and reformed system of recruitment , based principally on merit , which the government through the Public Service Commission , must put in place. We are confident that the present government who are instituting reforms in many important sectors of our socio -economic scenario will implement reforms in line with the report of the two-member committee of the PSC and after due consideration at the highest levels of government. |
