Agence France-Presse . Washington The US president, George W Bush, on Saturday renewed his push for making tax cuts adopted earlier in his administration permanent, arguing they are important to help the ailing US economy. ‘Members need to make the tax relief we passed permanent, reduce wasteful spending, and open new markets for American goods, services, and investment,’ Bush said in his weekly radio address. Last month, Bush signed into law a 168-billion-dollar stimulus package designed to bolster the sagging economy. But economists argue its effects remain to be seen. Tax rebate checks are due to start arriving in US consumers’ mailboxes in around two months, in a move intended by the White House to boost spending. But Bush warned Congress against overreacting to economic problems and taking measures like artificially propping up housing prices. ‘When you are steering a car in a rough patch, one of the worst things you can do is overcorrect,’ the president said. ‘That often results in losing control and can end up with the car in a ditch.’ |
