Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited holds top position among the banks last year in transacting import and remittance businesses, claimed chairman of the bank on Thursday.

The bank handled import businesses worth Tk 13,708 crore and remittances worth Tk 8,414 crore in 2007, he disclosed this at a meet the press programme organised by the IBBL on the occasion of its silver jubilee celebration.

Abu Nasser Muhammed Abduz Zaher, chairman of the IBBL, however admitted that the bank’s customer service was poor. IBBL has 40 lakh depositors and five lakh investment clients.

It is very difficult for the bank’s staff to provide expected service to this large number of clients, he said. The bank invested Tk 1,740 crore, highest amount among the private banks in 2007 while it handled export businesses worth Tk 6,669 crore.

Of the total investment, 51 per cent went to the industrial sector that generated over 1 million employments. Under the rural development scheme, the bank distributed around Tk 1,400 crore among 3.6 lakh clients, he said.
