The Novartis Bangladesh Ltd has started printing the names and strengths of its drugs on the packets in braille so that blind people can read them.

‘We have introduced the braille system in printing drugs' names and strengths on the packets of our Sandoz brand as a large number of blind people in the country depend on others for taking drugs,’ the company's managing director Ashfaque ur Rahman said on Tuesday.

He said the company was carrying out other activities under its corporate social responsibilities, including providing assistance to non-governmental organisations especially those working with malaria, tuberculosis and leprosy as well as disabled people.

The company also contributed financial assistance to Chief Adviser’s Relief Fund to help cyclone and flood victims, he added, saying that Novartis was one of the major exporters of pharmaceutical products in Bangladesh. The total export volume was $15 million in 2007.

All the products exported by the company were of Sandoz brand. ‘We are strengthening our medicine-based portfolio focusing on strategic growth platforms in innovation-driven pharmaceuticals, high-quality and affordable generics, leading provider of more than 20 human vaccines, sophisticated blood testing equipment development.’ He claimed that the company was also the leader in contact lens and lens-care products and self-medication OTC brands.

Headquartered in Switzerland, Novartis Group operate in over 140 countries around the world with more than one lakh people. Novartis has been working in Bangladesh since 1973.
