The teachers of Jagannath University continued with the demonstration for the third consecutive day on Wednesday demanding punishment for two students accused in a teacher assault case. Wearing black badges, they brought out a silent procession on the campus.

The teachers said they would continue with their work abstention and protest programmes till Saturday and would announce next course of action on the day. The admission test for Gha unit would be held on Friday, they said.

However, the authorities concerned expelled the two accused — Mohammad Imran Hossain, a third year student of social science department, and Mohammad Yousuf, a second year student of the same department — on charge of assaulting a female teacher of Bangla department.

At a protest rally, vice-chancellor Professor Sirajul Islam said the authorities temporarily expelled the two students. After getting the report from the probe committee, the syndicate would take the final decision in this regard, he added. The two students locked an altercation with the female teacher after they tried to call one of their friends out of classroom on Sunday. Later they attacked the teacher.

As the teacher informed the vice-chancellor of the incident the following day, the two students went to her residence and threatened her to face dire consequences. Enraged by it, all the teachers started work abstention since Monday and brought out procession protesting at the incident and demanding punishment for the two students. The educational activities remained suspended during the protest programme.

A five-member probe committee, headed by science faculty dean Mohammad Abu Yousuf, also convenor of Jagannath University Teachers’ Association, was formed on Monday and asked to submit the report within a week. At a press conference, Abu Yousuf and proctor Kazi Asaduzzaman submitted a preliminary report accusing Imran and Yousuf.

They condemned the assault on the teacher and blamed the law enforcers for the failure to arrest both the students who, they claimed, were roaming on the campus after the incident. All the students’ wings of the political parties also expressed their solidarity with the teachers and demanded punishment for the accused.
