The arbitration tribunal of the Federation of the Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Monday ruled that candidature of MA Rouf Chowdhury, who is vying for the post of president of the apex trade body, was valid.

The election board of the FBCCI on Monday announced the verdict. The FBCCI administrator, Syed Manzur Elahi, headed the tribunal including Fazlul Hoque, president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and Barrister Tuhin Malik, a Supreme Court practitioner.

‘The arbitration tribunal ruling said Chowdhury’s candidature is valid according to the rules of the FBCCI,’ an election board official told this correspondent on Monday. Osman Gani, a member of the FBCCI general body, petitioned against the candidature of MA Rouf Chowdhury.

Gani alleged that Chowdhury was elected to the FBCCI board as director for three consecutive terms and as per the FBCCI rules a candidate cannot contest in the election for three terms after availing the directorship.

But the FBCCI tribunal observed that Chowdhury’s election as director for three times do not come under the revised rules as they were enacted later on. Sources at the FBCCI said that petitioner against Chowdhury was preparing to go to the High Court for canceling verdict of the FBCCI tribunal and block Chowdhury’s from election.

A section of the FBCCI members fear if battle starts in court, the election at the FBCCI might be suspended. The tribunal, however, cancelled candidatures of four others — Khandaker Ruhul Amin, Amir Hossain Khan, Anisur Rhaman Badsha and Nasir Uddin.

Amin’s candidature was disputed as colleagues had challenged his leadership, Khan and Badsha’s nomination documents were found faulty while that of Nasir faced cancellation due to be a defaulted bank loan.

The FBBCI election is scheduled to be held on March 17. On February 28, the election board had announced final list of 53 candidates in the race for directorships. According to the FBCCI constitution, in its 38-member board, 14 directors are nominated – seven by seven leading chambers and seven by seven leading associations of the country.

Remaining 24 directors —12 from the chamber group and 12 from the association group — are elected through direct voting. All the 38 directors — nominated and elected — enjoy the voting right to chose one president and two vice-presidents to lead the FBCCI.

Annisul Huq, representing the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and A Rouf Chowdhury, representing the Edible Oil Refiners’ Association, are vying for the position of president
