The Globe Constructions managing director, Atiqullah Khan Masud, also editor and publisher of the daily Janakantha, was jailed on Thursday for seven years on fraudulence charge.

Tanzina Ismail, judge of the special judge’s court 6 of Dhaka set up on the Sangsad complex to try high-profile corruption suspects, also sentenced Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha official SM Asaduzzaman to seven years’ imprisonment in the same case.

The court also fined the two Tk 6.3 crore each and ordered them to serve one more year in jail in case of failure to pay the fine. The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with the Motijheel police on September 30, 2007, against Atiqullah Khan Masud, SM Asaduzzaman and Rajuk employee Md Akram Hossain.

The charge sheet filed in the case dropped Akram’s name. According to the prosecution, on June 26, 1990, Masud submitted the designs to Rajuk for approval of two buildings, nine-storeyed and six-storeyed on Hussaini Dalan Road.

Asaduzzaman approved the Globe Constructions design without informing the Building Construction Committee. The joint forces arrested Masud on March 7, 2007, at Janakantha Bhaban at Eskaton. He faces seven more cases, including three on fraud charges, and a Dhaka court is set to deliver verdict on March 9 in a case against him.
