Staff Correspondent The housing and public works ministry has initiated to provide lodging for low-income, floating workers in the capital. The Public Works Department has constructed a half-brick building on six acres of land at Mirpur Section 6 on its workshop premises in Dhaka to initially house 120 floating workers only for night stay, said the ministry officials. ‘The people of different trades having no place to put up at night in Dhaka will be allowed to stay at the centre. A nominal charge of Tk 1–2 will be taken from each of them for a night’s stay,’ the public works secretary, ASM Rashidul Hai, told reporters in his office on Thursday. He said more such centres would be set up in some other areas of the city to resolve housing problems of the low-income, floating people involved in various trades in the city. Hawkers, rickshaw pullers and day labourers, among others, will be allowed to stay at the centres, equipped with toilet and water supply, at night. The move will help to resolve to some extents the housing problem the low-income group, the secretary said, adding many of such workers pass night on the footpath and lead an inhuman life for lack of housing facilities. |
