Staff Correspondent Save Environment Movement (SEM) on Thursday urged the government to immediately stop the construction work of Gulshan-Banani connecting bridge which they said being constructed violating the wetland protection act, environment protection act and environment protection rules. Leaders of the organisation made the demand after visiting the site on Road 11 in Banani. They also talked to the local people. The leaders said the construction of the bridge filling up Gulshan Lake would affect the environment and intensify traffic congestion in the area. As a result, this residential area would turn into an uninhabitable place. The High Court issued a stay order for 10 days on the construction works after SEM and Gulshan Society had filed writ petitions, they said, adding that the authorities concerned violating the High Court order continued the construction work. They also called for following the master plan of Rajuk if the authorities want to do anything on the lake. Engineer Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah, journalist Kamal Lohani, chairman of the SEM Abu Naser Khan, convener of zone-3 of Gulshan Society Moniruzzaman Chowdhury and former ambassador CM Morshed visited the site. |
