Staff Correspondent Two personal physicians of ailing Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, detained in jail, after examining her health on Wednesday told the press that she should be sent abroad for treatment. They, however, did not make any such official recommendations, said a senior prison official. Cardiologist Baren Chakravarty said they had suggested a change in her treatment. Medicine specialist ABM Abdullah also examined Hasina’s health later. Gynaecologist Shahla Khatun, who visited Hasina in the jail on the Jatiya Sangsad complex in the morning, advised a thorough check-up of her health in a local hospital. Baren said, ‘Her blood pressure is fluctuating. She is also suffering from allergy problems in addition to ear complications.’ ‘I was there to examine her blood pressure. But I found her to be suffering from allergy problems,’ he said, adding they suggested a change in treatment. Baren, however, said that Hasina should be sent abroad for proper treatment. Medicine specialist ABM Abdullah told the press that Hasina’s health problems may have resulted from her ear complications. ‘The treatment of her ears is possible only in the United States.’ Gynaecologist Shahla Khatun advised a thorough medical check-up in a local hospital. ‘She [Shahla] has also collected her urine sample for test to determine whether Hasina has any infection,’ a senior prison official said. Two more personal physicians of Hasina, ENT specialist Pran Gopal and eye specialist Syed Modasser Ali, will visit her at the special jail sometime Thursday. The physicians will make their recommendations on the latest health condition of Hasina and her treatment. ‘Measures will be taken in line with the recommendations,’ said the inspector general (prisons), Zakir Hasan. Asked about her treatment abroad, he said higher authorities would make the decision considering her health conditions. The prison authorities initially said the five physicians would examine Hasina together, but the plan was later changed to give the physicians enough time for the examination of Hasina’s health. Hasina, arrested at her house at Dhanmondi on July 16, 2007, has been suffering from multiple ailments, including complications in the ears. Hasina faces three extortion and two corruptions cases filed during the tenure of the interim administration. Her lawyers and party leaders alleged there had been a lapse in her treatment, but a prison official brushed aside the complaints. Hasina’s husband M Wazed Mia on Tuesday also sent a letter to the chief adviser, Fakhruddin Ahmed, requesting her release and proper treatment abroad. Demand for Hasina’s release and treatment abroad got momentum after the release of her senior party colleague Abdul Jalil, now being treated in Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on a 30-day parole. The authorities are thinking about forming a high-powered medical board, with physicians approved by Hasina to decide whether she would require treatment abroad. |
