Staff Correspondent The Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority on Wednesday seized seven buses and minibuses and filed 117 cases against vehicles and drivers. The vehicles were seized and cases filed during the special drive of the DMP and BRTA conducted at the Rokeya Sarani, road in front of US Embassy, road in front of Rampura Television Centre and Jatrabari crossing, BRTA officials said. The buses and minibuses were seized for not having any documents, they said, adding a total of 269 vehicles were checked during the drive. The cases were filed against vehicles, including CNG auto-rickshaws, taxicabs, human haulers and buses, for lacking documents like updated route permits, registrations, fitness certificates and tax tokens, and against drivers for not having genuine licenses and violation of traffic rules. There are allegations that a large number of motorised vehicles ply the city roads without proper documents and most of the drivers do not have genuine driving licenses. The team of the special drive comprised BRTA inspectors, technical assistants, traffic sergeants and constables. The special drive, launched on February 26 to curb plying of unfit vehicles and take action against fake license-holding divers, will be ended, said Abdur Rouf, director, enforcement of BRTA. The BRTA will resume its regular drive, which was suspended for the special DMP-BRTA drive, he added. ‘The regular mobile court drive of BRTA has been suspended because of inadequate manpower to run two drives simultaneously,’ said executive magistrate Abdur Rashid of BRTA. According to BRTA, there are 4.12 lakh motorised vehicles including car, jeep, microbus, taxicab, CNG-auto-rickshaw, bus, minibuses, truck, human haulers and motorcycles were registered with the BRTA in Dhaka during the 1999-2006 period. |
