Staff Correspondent The British Council on Monday organised a seminar on veterinary infectious diseases, detection and vaccinology in order to make policymakers, researchers, health experts and concerned people aware of the issue. Professor Joe Brownlie, teacher of pathology and infectious diseases at the Royal Veterinary College in London, was the key speaker at the seminar. He highlighted the results of the UK Foresight report on the technological and policy priorities and the future challenges of infectious diseases which will affect humans, plants and animals. ‘With climate change it is expected that human and animal diseases will require integrated approaches and actions as new diseases appear,’ he said. People dealing with infectious diseases, public health, veterinary sciences, microbiology and pharmacy took part in the seminar, titled ‘Infectious diseases: a vision for future detection, identification and monitoring’, held at British Council on Fuller Road in the capital. Professor Joe Brownlie, author of about 150 publications in scientific journals, also shared his experience in dealing with infectious disease, and involvement in molecular pathology, immunological and molecular diagnosis. The UK Foresight programme uses science-based methods to provide visions of the future. Its research methods are useful in helping to identify potential risks and opportunities in relation to science and technology, which can enable policymakers to develop strategies to cope with the future. |
