Staff Correspondent The Communist Party and the Workers Party (WP) on Sunday urged the strengthening of left alternative political forces to save the country from the present crisis. The leaders of the two parties at a meeting at the central Communist Party office made a unanimous decision on strengthening people’s movement and working out an independent political stand. The parties also decided to work together to achieve the political goal, a Communist Party release said. The meeting called on the government to lift the ban on political activities, withdraw the state of emergency and to restore trade unionism and other democratic rights of the people. The left leaders called on the Election Commission to hold the general elections in keeping with its commitment or earlier, if possible, after required reforms of the electoral system. The leaders called on the government to take immediate measures to contain the increase in the prices of essential commodities, introduce fair-price shops across the country and ensure smooth supply of agricultural inputs. The meeting demanded that the forces who were against independence and are communal should be kept out of the election process. Chaired by the Communist Party president, Monzurul Ahsan Khan, the meeting was attended, among others by the Workers Party president, Rashed Khan Menon, and the general secretary, Bimal Biswas, and the CPB general secretary, Mujahidul Islam Selim. |
