CA asks physicians to practise medical ethics PDF Print E-mail

The chief adviser, Fakhruddin Ahmed, on Saturday urged the country’s physicians to practise the key principles of medical ethics, saying that welfare of patients should be their ultimate goal of professional efforts.

‘It is essential to treat patients with compassion and good conduct… You will have to follow the principles of equality and fairness in providing services and protecting dignity and privacy of the patients,’ he said.

The chief adviser made the call while addressing the 10th convocation 2008 of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.

He also called upon the physicians to maintaining transparency and professional efficiency while treating patients. A total of 557 physicians got FCPS (Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons) and MCPS (Member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons) degrees for the years 2005, 2006, 2007 and January 2008 in the convocation.

Of them, 443 physicians got FCPS degree while 114 received MCPS. The chief adviser distributed certificates to some of the physicians.

He also distributed Ashab Memorial Gold Medal among three physicians for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 for their extraordinary academic performance in FCPS medicine and distributed Dr Sheikh Humayun Kabir Memorial Gold Medal among three physicians for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 for their extraordinary performance in surgery.

The BCPS president, Professor Mobin Khan, gave the convocation speech who also presided over the function. The health adviser, Dr AMM Showkat Ali, health secretary AKM Zafar Ullah Khan, BCPS ex-president AKM Mahbubur Rahman and vice-president Professor MA Majid also spoke on the occasion.

National professors in the medical field, fellows and members of the BCPS and noted personalities were also present. The chief adviser urged the new postgraduates to be active in facing the new threats of diseases like reappearance of TB, possibility of spreading HIV/AIDS, contamination of Arsenic, outbreak of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, gout and lung diseases and the threat of spreading bird flu.

He said the physicians would have to work out proper strategy and make best utilisation of their professional knowledge to face those challenges.

Fakhruddin urged the new fellows and members of the BCPS to apply their professional skills in the service of distressed patients and ensure an effective and people-oriented health service system in the country.

He said in a developing country like ours mutual cooperation and coordanation among government, private and professional organisations is important to expand health services among common people. Development of the health sector should continue on the basis of demand in consistence with the purchasing capacity of people and on modern technology.

He called upon all to make effective, dedicated and meaningful contributions through combined efforts of all to ensuring good health for the poor people. Earlier, the chief adviser joined the convocation procession.
