Former US ambassador to Bangladesh Patricia Butenis, now stationed in Baghdad, arrived in Dhaka on a ‘private visit’ on Saturday, an official of the US embassy said.

‘She is strictly on a private visit, not on any special assignment,’ a US embassy spokesperson in Dhaka said.

The sudden visit of the former ambassador, however, sparked off speculations in political arena as the country is moving towards the next elections.

Butenis left Dhaka in April 2007 to take up her new assignment in Iraq as deputy chief of mission in Baghdad.

The spokesperson said the itinerary of Butenis during the visit would not be made public for security reasons and added that she would return to Baghdad after the tour.
