The Dhaka City Corporation pulled down at least 10 unauthorised outdoor advertisement signs in the capital Thursday night.

Of the 10 hoardings, eight were removed from the Gulshan Shooting Club area in Gulshan and the rest from Kuril Bishaw Road.

The scrapped signs were both unauthorised and larger than the approved size, said the officials, adding that the DCC approves a maximum of 600 square feet advertisement with 40 feet width and 15 feet height.

Earlier Wednesday night, the corporation team removed six outdoor unauthorised advertisement signs from RAOWA Club, Manik Miah Avenue and Gabtoli areas in the capital.

The advertisement cell of the corporation launched the drive on February 25 removing 11 unauthorised signs from the road stretching between Mirpur Technical Crossing and Gabtoli and on February 26, it pulled down 10 signs on both sides of the road connecting Swamibagh and Jatrabri, DCC officials said.

When contacted, Maksudur Rahman Chowdhury, chief conservancy officer of the DCC told this correspondent, ‘We have launched this drive to remove illegal signs from the city and it will continue for a couple of weeks.’

They had almost completed a survey of the advertisement signs in the capital, sources in the advertisement cell said, adding on the basis of that survey, they are identifying the illegal ones. The drive is conducted against the ad signs installed on the corporation land without taking approval of the authorities.

The DCC cannot deal with the unauthorised advertisements fixed at the top of private buildings as the DCC is waging a legal battle with the outdoor advertisement owners in the court over the issue.

During the ongoing drive, the corporation is just pulling down the signs, leaving the structures of the hoardings untouched as, according to the corporation sources, demolition of the structures is time-consuming.
