Bangladesh Nationalist Party Staff correspondent The splinter group in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party have said they would ‘take’ Khandaker Delwar Hossain, to the dialogue with the Election Commission if the party secretary general, nominated by chairperson Khaleda Zia, agreed to accompany them. ‘We will go for the dialogue taking Khandaker Delwar with us after we receive a fresh invitation from the Election Commission’, the acting secretary general of the Saifur Rahman-led faction of the party, Hafizuddin Ahmed, told reporters on Thursday. When asked how they would take Khandaker Delwar with them if he declined their offer, Hafiz skipped a direct answer saying that they were working for ‘unity in the party’. ‘We can forge unity easily if Saifur Rahman and Khandaker Delwar sit together to settle the issues’, he said. ‘The misunderstandings will be resolved through discussions.’ Khandaker Delwar, however, earlier asked the splinter group to revoke the October 29 ‘meeting’ of the standing committee that had named Saifur Rahman and Hafizuddin acting chairman and acting secretary general of the party respectively. When his opinion was sought about the idea of forming a national consensus government, Hafiz said a national government could be formed even before the polls comprising the political parties having representatives in parliament. He described as ‘unfortunate’ the graft case regarding the Barapukuria coalmine project filed against the former prime minister Khaleda Zia and 15 others. ‘The accused are innocent and they will eventually be acquitted of the charges,’ he hoped. A planned dialogue between the BNP and the EC remained stalled as the issue of who should represent the party in the talks was pending with the High Court although the commission concluded its second round of dialogues with the political parties Thursday. Four out of seven standing committee members, who attended the October 29 meeting, said in identical but separate statements to the court that it was not a meeting at all. They are RA Gani, Chowdhury Tanvir Ahmed Siddiqui, Khandakar Mahbubuddin Ahmed and M Shamsul Islam. They said that it was ‘tea party’ where two ‘unknown’ persons took their signature in a draft resolution. |
