Formation of an independent local government commission is essential to strengthen the local government system, Governance Coalition, a combine of 27 NGOs, told a news conference in Dhaka.

The observation came at the conference on ‘Reviewing the proposed Local Government Commission Ordinance’ held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Wednesday.

The commission should be formed as per the proposals already published by the coalition, they said. The coalition also proposed constituting an election panel with the representation of female, government and opposition party, former advisers to the caretaker government, chairman of University Grants Commission, researcher and cabinet secretary to the commission.

Mohsin Ali, member secretary of the convention organising committee and coordinator of Governance Coalition, gave the welcome address at the news conference.

Professor Salauddin M. Aminuzzaman of public administration department at Dhaka University read out the keynote speech. Katrik Chandra Mandal of Manusher Jonno Foundation and Mahbubur Rahman Tulu of BUPF, among others, were present.
