Ferry service on the Bhola-Lakshmipur in the River Meghna stars on trial.

The service will be formally inaugurated during the meeting of the council of advisers scheduled for March 5 in Barisal.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation and the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority said expert opinions were sought on the introduction of the ferry service on the route after a feasibility study which was completed on December 24, 2007 and the transport corporation's technical team submitted the study report on December 28.

The shipping ministry on January 15, 2008 decided to launch the ferry service.

Sources said the ferry service would connect the Chittagong–Khulna Highway with Barisal and Khulna metropolises and Mongla sea port.

They said pontoons have already been placed at Tajumuddin and Monju Chowdhurir Hat in Bhola and Lakshmipur after the construction of link roads.

Dredging at three points on the route will start soon, said the transport corporation and the authority after a visit to the spots Monday and Tuesday.
