Ex-PMO official surrenders to court PDF Print E-mail

A former administrative officer of the Prime Minister's Office, SM Ahsan Habib, sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment on February 11, surrendered to court on Monday. Judge Md Feroz Alam of the Special Judge's Court-1 in the Sangsad Bhaban area ordered him to jail.

The court on February 11 sentenced Habib to three years in jail and fined him Tk 95 lakh.

The court also sentenced another accused in the same case, owner of Bengal Consultants, Mirza Khabir, to two years in prison.

Khabir is on the run. The Anti-Corruption Commission assistant director, Shamsul Alam, filed the case with Tejgaon police station against the two on April 2 last year.

The case alleges that Habib demanded Tk 1 crore in bribe from businessman Chowdhury Afzal in return for giving him the green light to release a huge quantity of Benson & Hedges brand cigarettes seized by customs officials.

According to case details, the businessman gave Tk 93.5 lakh — Tk 50 lakh paid in two pay orders and Tk 43.5 lakh in cash.
