Police on Monday foiled a reception programme in honour of the detained Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, in front of the gate of the special jail in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban's premises.

The Muktijoddha Paribar Kalyan Sangsad organised the reception programme for Hasina, recalling her role in getting recognition of Ekushey February [21 February] as the International Mother Language Day.

When the leaders and activists of the organisation started to gather in front of the jail's gate at about 4:15 pm, a police contingent arrived and compelled them to leave the spot immediately.

They, however, handed over two books — Rabindranath Rastra Chinta O Bishwa Manabikata, by Anu Mohammad, and Nirbachito Sankalon by army chief General Moeen U Ahmed — to the jail authority for handing over to Hasina.

The Dhaka city Awami League's acting president MA Aziz, Kalyan Sangsad's secretary-general Abdul Hai, Abdul Haque Sobuj, Shamsul Haque, Razia Mostafa, Matin Bhuiyan and MA Jalil were present at the programme with about 35 activists.
