Our Correspondent Freedom fighters in Sylhet called upon the government on Saturday to begin trial of war criminals for upholding the spirit of the War of Independence. The war criminals must be punished and the government should begin their trial now, they said, adding that criminal activities in society would decrease if the war criminals were punished. They made the call at a reunion of freedom fighters of the Sylhet division held at Government Alia Madrassah ground in the Sylhet city. Air vice-martial (retd) AK Khandaker, deputy commander-in-chief in the liberation war, addressed the function as chief guest, while Subrata Chakrabarti Jewel, president of the divisional unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad, was in the chair. Terming the freedom fighters best sons of the nation, AK Khandaker said they would boycott the political parties which would take part in the next election forging alliance with war criminals. Former law maker and freedom fighter Dewan Farid Gazi, major general (retd) CR Datta Bir Uttam, major general (retd) KM Shafiullah Bir Uttam, lieutenant general (retd) Mir Shawquat Ali Bir Uttam, dramatist M Hamid, lieutenant colonel (retd) Nurunnabi Khan, major general (retd) Masudur Rahman Bir Pratik, lieutenant colonel (retd) Abu Osman Chowdhury, Dr MA Hasan and freedom fighter Sarwar Ali addressed the function, among others. Later on, freedom fighters of the region also sat in an exchange of views with leaders of the Sector Commanders' Forum in the afternoon, the organisers said. |
