Staff Correspondent The People's Commission on Jute and Jute Industry, a civic forum, has reiterated the demand for cancellation of the process of giving lease of state-owned jute mills to private parties. The commission leaders expressed concerns at reports that the proposal for contracting out the management of Qaomi Jute Mills in Sirajganj and People's Jute Mills in Khulna was awaiting government endorsement. They also urged the interim government to cancel the move for inviting re-tender to lease out five more jute mills to save the country's jute industry from ruination and protect the interest of the farmers. A press release issued Saturday said the commission, at a meeting on February 14, expressed apprehensions that those who would get the management contract would plunder national resources in the process of running the mills only to maximise profit. Presided over by the commission chairman, Mohammad Golam Rabbani, the meeting was also addressed by the commission's member-secretary Shah Alam and members Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, Shahidullah Chowdhury, Morshed Ali and Shsmsul Alam. 'A non-elected government is not constitutionally authorised to take such an important decision. So, the commission thinks that it is the obligation of the government to cancel the process of giving lease to follow the constitution,' read a resolution of the meeting. The commission called for involving all concerned to save and revive the jute sector. |
