Import of rice through Sonamasjid Land Port has been suspended again from Friday afternoon due to blockade laid by Indian truckers at the zero point near Mohodipur Land Port in India.

Port officials said they had requested their Indian counterparts to allow only rice-laden trucks on Friday, weekly holiday in Bangladesh, to cross the border to help ease the tailback caused by sudden Indian export ban.

As a few fruits-laden trucks sneaked into Bangladesh, Sonamasjid port officials sent those back, irking Indian truckers who put the blockade, port officials and traders said.

A long line of trucks, carrying mostly rice bound for Bangladesh, were stranded in the Indian side since February 8 as India suddenly banned rice export in the private sector.

Later Indian authorities lifted the ban and rice-laden trucks started moving from February 13 until Indian truck drivers blocked the road Friday afternoon, officials said.

Till 2:00 pm Friday, 52 trucks carrying 800 tonnes of rice entered into Bangladesh territories.

Assistant Commissioner of Customs at Sonamasjid Land Port Arun Kumar Biswas said that the suspension was caused by problems in Indian side and they were trying to get the things solved.

No negotiations could be reached until Friday evening despite hectic efforts made by port officials and traders.
