Agency The work of registering inmates of Dhaka Central Jail as voters took off formally Thursday. District election officer Nawabul Islam said: "Photographs of the inmates are being taken in their 'civilian clothes'." "There is one booth for women and two booths for men." "The registration will be finished in three days," he added. The listing started around 9.00 am in the presence of deputy inspector general of prisons Maj Shamsul Haider Siddiqui, divisional deputy election commissioner Biswas Latifur Rahman and other election officers. "The data collection started Sunday but registration with photographs began," Biswas told bdnews24.com by phone. Data collectors have gathered information on some 2,982 inmates up to Thursday. According to the Election Commission Secretariat and Voter List Preparation Project control room, up to Jan 31 the total number of eligible voters in the country's 12 central and 55 district jails was 69,507. Of them, 8,723 in Dhaka Central Jail, 3,236 in Chittagong, 2,499 in Khulna, 2,325 in Comilla, 2,140 in Sylhet and 1,906 in Narayanganj, are eligible to be registered as voters. |
