Marriage registrars on Tuesday demanded that the law ministry should remain the delegating authority to issue, cancel or suspend the licences for marriage registrars, which authority is about to be given to deputy commissioners.

The marriage registrars, under the banner of the Bangladesh Nikah Registrars Kalyan Samity, at a press conference in the Dhaka Reporters Unity's auditorium claimed that if the authority to control the marriage registrars was given to deputy commissioner in the districts, it would create chaos in the marriage registration system.

In the press conference, presided over by Shah Mohammad Nesarul Haque, convener of the association, they also said the marriage registrars across the country would be compelled to launch a tough movement if the government refuses to budge from its decision.

The advisory council of the interim government on Sunday approved the draft Muslim Marriage and Divorces (Registration) (Amendment) Ordinance 2008, delegating the authority of issuing licences to deputy commissioners.

As per the new ordinance, the deputy commissioners of all the districts will provide licences to marriage registrars as well as cancel and suspend the licences. There are presently 5,219 licensed marriage registrars in the country.
