Mufti Hannan, chief of the Bangladesh chapter of the banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, and his younger brother admitted being involved in the August 7 grenade attack on the Sylhet mayor in 2004.

Hannan and his brother Maizur Rahman Ovi said they were behind the grenade attack during his remand in custody for three days which ended Saturday, sources in the Criminal Investigation Department said.

Senior CID inspector Zubayer Ahmed, also investigation officer of the case, quoted Hannan as saying that Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul, Humayun Kabir Himu and Fahim of Harkat-ul-Jihad took part in the attack on the mayor, Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, at the Gulshan Complex at Taltala in the city on August 7, 2004. Hannan and his brother were remanded in custody for three days on Thursday for interrogation in the case.

The court sent them in jail on Saturday, court sources said. Kamran, also president of the city Awami League, escaped the attack and an Awami League leader was killed and about 50 were injured. More training institutes to make northern people skilled, says foreign adviser
