The election commissioners are still in the dark about the content of the Election Commission Secretariat Ordinance 2008 which will separate the secretariat from the Prime Minister's Office (now Chief Adviser's Office).

'We have asked the authorities concerned to provide us with the approved ordinance. After we receive it in a day or two and if we find that our proposals have not been reflected, we will hold a briefing on the issue,' the chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, said on Friday.

A day after the council of advisers had approved the ordinance, Shamsul on Wednesday said he had questions about the independence of the Election Commission secretariat.

'There are many things. We will talk about them once we receive the ordinance,' he said. The council of advisers on Tuesday approved the ordinance.

The ordinance will be promulgated through a gazette notification by the president. Election commissioner Muhammed Sohul Hussain on Thursday said, 'I am not yet aware of the amendments made to the ordinance.'

According to the latest amendments to the proposal, the secretariat will be accountable to the Election Commission, not to the chief election commissioner, and the commissioners will be accountable to the president.
