Leaders of different political parties and trade unions on Wednesday called on the government to constitute a national commission on jute to suggest ways and means to save the jute sector from ruination.

Giving the call at a seminar in the city, the leaders said the existing problems in the jute sector could easily be solved and jute industry revitalised, should the government show its willingness and take initiative for formulation of a timely jute policy.

Khulna Committee to Protect Jute and Jute Industry organised the seminar at the Bangladesh Institute of Management at Sobhanbagh in the city as part of the Global Economic Justice Forum 2008.

Jute workers’ leader from Khulna Hafiz Uddin Bhuiyan chaired the session. Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president Hasanul Haq Inu, secretary general of Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies Nazrul Islam Khan, trade union leader Shahidullah Chowdhury, workers’ leader Wajedul Islam Khan, and convenor of Sramik Nirapatta Forum Hamida Hossain addressed the seminar moderated by Karmajibi Nari president Shirin Akhter. Menon suggested that the sector must be supported even by providing subsidy to farmers and other stakeholders.

He called for supports from all political parties in protecting the jute sector. Inu said that years of negligence led to the sorry state of the jute sector.
