A special court dealing with graft suspects Wednesday sentenced former power secretary ANH Akhter Hossain to 10 years in jail on charges of accumulating and concealing information about wealth.

He is in jail. The court also sentenced Akhter's wife Nazneen Akhter, now on the run, to three years in jail for assisting her husband in amassing wealth.

The judge fined her Tk 50,000 and if she fails to pay the fine she has to stay another month behind bars.

The court indicted him on Oct 9. A total of 40 witnesses testified on behalf of the state.

The ACC on Feb 18 made a list of some 50 politicians, businessmen and other government officials as corrupt suspects and asked them to submit accounts of their moveable and immovable assets by 72 hours.
