Staff Correspondent Foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury on Tuesday opined that country's foreign policy should be formulated on the basis of the people's consensus and the next foreign minister must have the confidence of all the political parties. Iftekhar came up with the observation when the newly elected office-bearers of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangaldesh (DCAB), led by its president Masud Karim, met him at the foreign ministry. 'We are temporary. The next foreign minister, no matter which party he belongs to, must have good relations with all political parties as foreign policy should be based on national consensus,' he said. 'My job is to develop political relations (with various countries) including the five permanent members of the UN, and there must be follow-up action by the next elected government to maintain continuity,' said Iftekhar. Touching upon the issue of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRB), he said, 'Their interest in investing in Bangladesh is very important, and we've to capitalise on it.' He referred to the non-resident Indians and non-resident Chinese who have played vital roles in the development of their countries. DCAB's general secretary Raheed Ejaz and its executive committee members Badiul Alam and Mostafa Kamal also spoke at the meeting. Dr Atiq demands compensation from rich countries |
