The acting president of the Awami League (AL), Zillur Rahman said, on Sunday, that his party is preparing to participate in the next general elections. He hoped that the AL would take part in the elections as part of a ‘14-party alliance’ with the political parties that constituted an earlier AL-led combine.

‘We want elections within quickest possible time and we are preparing to contest the polls,’ Zillur told reporters at his Gulshan residence in the afternoon, adding that it should be possible to hold the elections within March or April. ‘We will participate as part of the 14-Party Alliance and hope that the others will remain with us,’ he said, adding that the AL has already contacted their allies in this regard.

The AL leader also said that his party will not sit engage in dialogue with anybody, if pre-conditions are imposed. ‘We want to sit in political dialogues with the government without any conditions attached,’ he said, adding that the dialogue was the only way to hold the elections on time and his party hoped that the government would respond to the call of dialogue without prescribing conditions.

Earlier, the New Jersey and Italy units of the AL handed over cheques of Taka 500,000 and Tk 100,000 respectively for victims of last year’s Cyclone Sidr. The New Jersey unit president Sujan Ahmed, general secretary Tipu Sultan and Italy unit acting president Mahtab Hossain handed over the money to the party’s relief fund. While receiving the relief, Zillur said that the AL would not accept any relief funds for Sidr affected people after January 31. The AL presidium members Abdur Razzak and Matia Chowdhury among others were present at the occasion.
