Two men suspected for their links to the banned Islamist radical group Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh were placed on a seven day remand for interrogation on Tuesday.

The criminal investigation department on January 17 had asked the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court for a 10-day remand for the two, for their possible role in the Udichi bomb blast case.

The two suspected JMB activists Maulana Abdur Rauf and Abul Hossain were arrested in Jessore by the law enforcers.

On March 7, 1999, ten people were killed and over 100 people were injured in two separate bomb blast incidents at a cultural function of the Udichi Shilpi Goshthi in Jessore town at around 1:00am.

After the incident a case was filed with the Jessore Kotwali Police Station in this regard, later handed over to the CID for investigation.

After investigation, the CID handed over a charge sheet to a first class magistrate's court in Jessore accusing former minister and vice president of BNP, Tariqul Islam, among others.

Later Tariqul Islam's name was dropped by the High Court. On June 28, 2006 a court in Jessore acquitted all the accused due to lack of evidence.

After the pronouncement of the verdict, a petition was filed praying for re-investigation of the case. On November 11, 2006, Mufti Hannan, leader of banned Islamist radical group Harkatul Jihad, confessed to a court that he was involved in the Udichi bomb blast incidents.

Mufti Hannan was arrested on October 1, 2005. Following the confession, the government ordered the authorities to take necessary steps to reinvestigate the blasts. The two latest suspects are now in police remand, awaiting interrogation.
