The Dhaka University with the financial support from the Dutch Bangla Bank Limited is constructing a centre for excellence to accelerate researches in arts and social sciences.

The centre, to be supervised by the best scholars, teachers and researchers, is the first of its kind in the fields of arts and humanities in the country.

The university authorities will name the 11-storey centre as the Dutch-Bangla Bank Centre for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences Bhaban.

'It will be properly equipped with world-class research facilities including library and archive, equipment for holding advanced-level seminar and conferences,' SMA Faiz, the university vice-chancellor, said.

'On completion, I think, the centre will play an important role in advanced studies of human and social sciences in the country and it will also be able compete with same type of centers in neighboring countries,' he hoped.

The centre will also award fellowships and scholarships for advanced studies leading to doctoral and post-doctoral researches for the scholars from home and abroad, he added.

The university authorities began the construction of the building beside the Teacher-Student Centre with a government allocation of Tk 1 crore and completed three stories.

The centre will now be an 11-storey building with accommodation facilities for researchers, auditorium, gallery and a university's museum.

'Noted historian and professor of history at the university, Ahmed Kamal, is the man for whom the idea of such a centre of excellence is coming into reality,' Faiz said, giving his thanks on behalf of the university authorities to Ahmed Kamal.

All the public universities are facing severe fund crunch, he said and added that the building could not be made 11-storey if the Dutch-Bangla Bank did not come up with the assistance of Tk 9.73 crore.

'In recognition of their contribution we are naming building as the Dutch-Bangla Bank Centre for Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences Bhaban,' the vice chancellor
