Staff Correspondent The government-owned banks and financial institution disbursed about Tk 3,900 crore agriculture loans in the first six months of the current fiscal, said Nazrul Huda, deputy governor of the Bangladesh Bank on Sunday. It is 47 per cent or their fiscal target, which is Tk 8400 crore. The main target of the monetary policy is to increase growth by investing in the production sector, he said. 'Private sector banks are now giving loans to agriculture and it is a big achievement of the central bank,' he said. He, however, said they have charged 13 per cent interest rate, which is relatively high. The banks are advised to give agriculture loans with a motivation of social responsibilities and without thinking about profit, he said. There should be a coordinated effort to have a bumper boro crop to make up the losses of aman, he said. 'The government should look after that sufficient fertiliser and diesel be supplied to farmers.' Sonali Bank in the July-December period disbursed Tk 250 crore, Janata Bank Tk 182 crore, Agrani Bank Tk 90 crore, Rupali Bank Tk 12 crore, Bangladesh Krishi Bank Tk 1412 crore, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Tk 321 crore, Bangladesh Rural Development Board Tk 331 crore and Bangladesh Commerce Bank disbursed Tk 1.5 crore. |
