BRAC Bank Heist Staff Correspondent The detective police arrested four people at Dhaka and Munshiganj on Thursday for their suspected involvement with the heist at the BRAC Bank Dhanmondi Branch and recovered some looted ornaments from their possession. A team of the detective police recovered 221 tolas of gold ornaments, 13 tolas of silver ornaments, two diamond rings, Tk 3 lakh in cash and several instruments, believed to be used during the heist, from their possession. The arrested were identified as Mojnu, 43, his sister Moyna, 40 and their brother-in-law Raja Mia, 45, of Puthimari under Srinagar upazila in Munshiganj and Muhit, 35, a resident of Mirpur in Dhaka. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Naim Ahmed at a news briefing, held at its office on Thursday afternoon, said that the team led by assistant commissioner Mainul Hasan managed to arrest three of the suspects — Mojnu, Moyna and Raja Mia — at Jatrabari in Dhaka and Srinagar in Munshiganj early Thursday. Another suspect was arrested at Gulistan in the city Thursday evening, the police said. The arrested persons confessed to the heist, one of the investigators said, adding that they intensively interrogated them to nab other accomplices. Several teams of RAB, Detective Branch police and Criminal Investigation Department are conducting raids on different districts to arrest criminals and recover the rests of looted valuables. Naim said every bank should maintain security code to protect the valuables but they didn't find any security code of the BRAC Bank. 'All residential hotels should also maintain detailed entry register regarding their boarders but most of the hotels kept only initial information.' A high official of the detective branch police who conducted the raids said, 'The looted ornaments were divided among 19 persons and we managed to recover only one portion of 19 shares.' 30 of the affected locker holders submitted their papers to the bank authorities claiming gold ornaments worth approximately Tk 3 crore, a source in the bank said. The bank's executive Abedur Rahman requested the affected clients to submit their claims. He said the bank's high-ups would sit with the law enforcers to make arrangement for paying compensation to the affected locker holders. |
