The National Curriculum and Textbooks Board on Tuesday said there is no chance of confusion over the role of late president Ziaur Rahman in forming the South Asian regional forum SAARC.

The board issued the statement following reports run by a section of dailies on Ziaur Rahman's role in establishing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

The media reports said the role of Ziaur Rahman in building the SAARC was undermined in Class IX civics textbook.

In a press statement, the Board authorities said it was written in an article titled 'Bangladesh's Relation with the SAARC' in Civics of Classes IX and X (2007) that 'Late President of Bangladesh General Ziaur Rahman first dreamt of forming the SAARC in 1985. He had created the ground by visiting the neighbouring countries. In 1985, formal works started in Dhaka with the initiatives of former president General HM Ershad.'

On the same topic, Civics of Classes IX and X, 2008 also said: 'Late President of Bangladesh General Ziaur Rahman first dreamt of forming the SAARC in 1985. He had created the ground by visiting the neighbouring countries. In 1985, the SAARC was born in Dhaka with the initiatives of former president General HM Ershad.'

The statement said it is noticeable that the name of Ziaur Rahman as the dreamer of SAARC remains unchanged in the textbook of 2008.
